I had a rather weird idea: build an AK on 1.6mm receier, however, make it not a screw built or rivet built, but use the Pins that HK uses to hold rifles like HK91 and HK33 together. This will also enable to do a barrel swap (undo 4 pins, pull out front trunnion and barrel, put in another front trunnion).
Does this idea have any merit? I just want a rifle with swappable calibers: 5.56, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 6.8x45 etc. I know that 5.56 and 5.45 AKs have the same receiver. So does this idea make any sense? D |

as are the cutouts for the magazines. Not to mention that rivets hold the receiver to the trunnions in 3 dimentions, not just two.
Listen, every couple of months somebody has this 'brainstorm' and wants to know what everyone thinks about it. Last time it was a screw build. Bottom line it's a bad idea. AK's are cheap, if you want different calibers, buy or build different rifles, or get an ar. |

Your idea makes sense, but does not have merit in the sense that the front trunnion is not held in by the shear capactiy of the rivets, but rather the friction generated between the recevier and trunnion by the compression of the rivets.
However, it is an intersting idea from an engineering standpoint for a QD barrel system. |
