OK folks, I have a sometimes issue. New build. The rifle seems to run/fire fine. Headspaced ok (CIP std go & no-go gages). Bolt is not bumped by the reciever extractor. Extractor looks long enough. Matching parts kit. The bolt extractor looks to be in good shape. It moves sideways about as much and with about the same difficulty as other bolt extractors I have.
Problem would happen every otherish round to about every 10 rounds now. Seems to be less frequent as time goes by. Rifle fired, the spent round is pulledout of the chamber and kind of jacks around inside the dust cover and hangs up in front of the bolt carrier and under the dust cover. Just about 90 degrees to the line of the barrel. The next round has been mostly inserted into the chamber. It hangs out a little because the jammed case prevents the carrier from coming all the way forward. I have pics of when it happens but cannot figure how to upload them Thanks! Sauramen |
| With the bolt in the carrier, push the carrier forward, putting the bolt even with the ejector, how much clearance is there between the ejector and the side of the bolt head where it is supposed to touch the rear of the cartridge. A buddy of mine took too much metal off of his ejector,and his gun was doing the same thing. There was enough slop between the carrier and the rails that sometimes it would allow the bolt to sit closer to the ejector and eject the round, and sometimes it wouldn't. |

Thanks for the idea. I took a look. The extractor seems to be just clearing the bolt face. The is a little sideways action on the bolt while it is in the carrier. It could perhaps be sliding over and then the extractor does not quite grab the case well to kick it out. I have also noticed a small "Scrape" mark on the under side of the extractor. Looks like some small amount of metal was removed. Nothing on the top or front "tip" of the extractor.

I think that may have been the issue. I looked again at the scuff marks on the underside of the reciever extracter. Gouge is really to much to call what I saw although some metal had been removed by the bolt moving past it. I fliped the rifle upside down on my anvil (nice flat hard surface) and used a large 1/2" pin punch and a small hammer to tap (in what would be "up" when the rifle was fired) it. I worked it to just below the "top" of the bolt extractor grove in the bolt (as would be when rifle was fired). I definatley have much more extractor protruding into the area of the bolt where the case would be held. Looks like it would have much more arm to throw the shell. I think I must have moved it maybe a couple of degrees or so. I then took a cridex (SP?) tip and buffed out and smoothed the bottom of the extractor where the bolt had marred it.
I do remember that the cases were not thrown out 20 feet like I am used to. More like 5 feet. I have one 74 that bounces the cases off the 12 foot ceiling 15 feet down the stall. | I had one do the same, when I built the receiver, I took too much off the ejector. if you can find someone to mig or tig , you can add some to the ejector and then file off the excess. a person might want to back-up with some copper to keep the bottom from getting to much weld hanging down.(for easier cleanup) I did this and have since fired the weapon and it ejects like it is supposed to. you won't have to heat treat again because the weld is already hard. |
