1) If I get a US-made receiver, can I use ALL the parts that come in a complete parts kit (with one or two internals swapped out so it's semi-auto only), or is it somehow still under 922? 2) If I build a 5.56mm AK, would I use a 7.62x39mm parts kit or a 5.45x39mm parts kit, and why? Do the internals matter, or just the bolt and bolt carrier? |
I know. It can be done. You missed the last of the Yugo M-95A kits by a few months so there are no parts kits except a few Krink kits. I don't think you really want an AMK or AK74 kit at all, but likely the answer is that the AK74 will have more in common. Then question is what are the parts (barrel, bolt) that you are using? 223 AKs don't follow any standards like AKMs or AK74s. I don't know all of the specifics of these parts relationships, so if you're serious about this then you'll want to wait for some better advice. You'll need a 223 barrel. Then you'll need a trunnion that is the same diameter. A gas block that is the correct diameter as that portion of the barrel and a FSB the correct size. You need a 223 bolt. You might be able to adapt an AK74 bolt. The carrier needs to match the stem diameter of the bolt. Other than that I don't think there is going to be much difference in the carriers. How the trunnion and bolt interact, I have no idea. Fitting these together might be some work. Naturally headspacing is involved so you'll be fitting the bolt to the trunnion or adjusting the barrels position to the trunnion and boring for the pin. So step back for a bit and look at the Saiga again. You have a barrel, gas block, trunnion, bolt and carrier that are all factory matched Russian parts. You also get a scope rail and AK74 rear block in the deal. All for under $300. |
