How much should these screw builds cost Parts kit & Reciever? What are other cost in building?: Yugo? Romy? AMD? What are other good part kit models that are readily avail.? |

screw builds work just as good as a rivet build. all of the original old school homebuilt ak kits were done with grade 8 screws before all the rivet jigs, moded bolt cutter etc were developed. yes rivets are the correct way in a purist point of view. my first build was done using the grade 8 screws. if you thread the trunion holes properly, clean out the threaded holes of all debrie and oil, and use red loctite you will have zero problems. some people used to fill in the hex head of the screw with jb weld, sand smooth to have a similiar look to rivets. |
Please cite a source offering a structural reason for not using hardened machine screws in the construction of a low stress assembly. Anecdotes, "Well, Bubba blew his butt up..." don't count. Not looking to fight, but that's akin to the "no-welds" arguments posted here. G3s are higher stress with a much higher pressure cartridge, and are assembled completely with welds. Done properly, welds and screws are fine. |
There's no need to remove the barrel with a screw build. You drill and tap with the barrel in place. That's why you need the drill press. If you remove the barrel, there's no reason to do a screw build. |
Exactly gfunk, I've done three screw builds then switched them to rivets when I got the tools. And those who have been in this for a while should remember the toothpick build that fired a few shoots, grade 8 screws will hold up if built properly. |
