How important is the slop or wiggle in the original.  I read the tacked post but was thinking of just soldering the new one on.  Any opinions welcome and thanks, Joe

I did the same thing....it works fine for me....I've heard that they wanted them to have movement in case the gas block got canted (common) then it would be less likely to hang up when cycling.

Use a rivet. The piston is designed to have some play. I believe the it is there to allow for the possibility slight misalignment.
Century welds the gas piston in WASRs through the rivet hole. After a few thousand cartridges my piston is about as loose as the riveted ones.

Rivet them, they need to be loose in order to function properly.
