Hey, fellers. I'm new to the AK board here, but not to AKs. I've built AKs off of Nodak receivers with great succuess, but I recently invested in all the equipment to bend out flats and plan to have the first rifle complete in a couple weeks. First off, I have some questions I hope you guys can help me out with: 1. What are the best flats to use? I'll be building mainly off of Romy kits and have really been thinking about just ordering from Cope's or Tapco. 2. Can I use the receiver flats to build a Romy RPK? I've not had too much experience with the RPKs other than just shooting them. 3. Are the stock adapters that allow a Chinese underfolder to be installed on to any run of the mill stamped receiver worth a damn? I know where to get a nice Chicom underfolder stock at a reasonable price, but was wondering how those adapters held up. 4. Any general information I need to know before I start popping receivers out? Thanks in advance! Regards, Quinn |
| We prefer the "improved" flats from Copes as they already have the upper rails bent and cut (that is due to having a cheap jig that does not bend the uppers, not necessary if you have a better jig). Not much experience building RPKs but from what I have seen you should be fine, although thicker receivers are preferred. To avoid having to purchase more tools we spot weld the lower rails on while the flat is still flat. This will not work with more expensive jigs but does with ours. We also heat treat in a kiln which does very well and it helps to use bolts in the trunion holes to hole the receiver in the shape it needs to be so it does not warp. I hope this helps, ask more qeustions if you have them. |
