Long tome shooter that just finished my first AR. I have a M16 GI cleaning kit from the 70's with sectioned rods, chamber brush etc.. I also have a 22cal rifle boresnake.
I see that new advancements have been made. I see tools like the OTIS Bone, C.A.T. M4, Talon scraper, etc, all of which do a great job and make cleaning more pleasurable and complete. Now, which tend to work the best? The complete Otis kit? The Talon field kit? Or, am I missing something that is better? Thanks for your help. |

I have one of those CAT M4 things, I don't use it, maybe if my bolt got really dirty? But then I would put it in my ultrasonic cleaner. I use a rod, with a bore brush and a chamber brush and a cotton brush. For the rest I use an old tooth brush and a large brush for the magwell. |

I clean with a boresnake most of the time. Occasionally I use rod and patches.
I have Tipton carbon fiber rods. The boresnakes are new for me the last year or so. I kind of like them.I dip about an inch or two into hoppe's right after the brushes and run through 3 times. Then I dip the tail into oil for the 4th pass. I usually oil about 6" from the end. I bought my boresnakes on eBay. I bought 2 of every caliber I needed. I clean them by soaking in a bucket of dish detergent and hot water. Then scrub and hang to dry. |
| I LOVE my Otis MSR/AR cleaning kit! It has pretty much anything you could think of in it. It has all the brushes and patch holders, the new ones come with the BONE tool (which honestly didn't overly impress me. Maybe if it had really heavy carbon build up, but I don't let my rifles get that dirty), along with picks and scrapers. It's a really complete kit and fits in my hand when zippered shut. |
