Was looking at the BONE tool as well as the avid scraper... any thoughts?

The bone tool works great and has a spot for scraping both the bolt itself and the inside of the BCG.   That said, I haven't yet hadso much carbon caked on that I needed the tool... you can probably get away with using q tips and solvent/clp.  The only reason I have one is because it came with my cleaning kit (Otis).  Unless you fire thousands of rounds in one sitting without cleaning, I don't see the need for a dedicated scraper tool tbh.

I just use a cheap knife, a toothbrush and CLP. You don't need to spend on a tool - it will not clean it any better.

The B.O.N.E. tool does a pretty good job but like mentioned earlier it takes quite a bit of carbon build-up for the tool to really shine. I clean my rifles after every range trip so I rarely have enough build up for the tool to remove. I did use it on a friends rifle that hadn't cleaned it once after firing 2K+ rounds. The carbon was old and rock hard...the BONE tool made short work of it. IMO it's a worthwhile tool to have in the old cleaning kit.

I looked at the BONE tool and wound up buying the CAT M4.
It seems to do a better job.
It cleans the bolt tail, the carrier hole, and includes a firing pin cleaner to clean the carbon off the front of the firing pin flange.

Same here. Haven't run into anything I can't remove with a bronze brush and either Ed's Red or brake cleaner in a spray can.

Never used the BONE, but the Avid tool works well.  Under $20 on eBay and Amazon.

A butter knive is perfect. The shape of the blade fits the bolt tail like a glove

The only time I have ever used one is when my friend got one, and I tried it after we went shooting and tried to burn the barrel out on my RR.

It did nothing that a butter knife or a good cleaning would do but my friend uses his every time he goes shooting and scrapes his bolt tail and laughs that I just spray mine down and give it a wipe.

I don't know, I don't watch videos except for porn.  Not sure why else you would use it.

Sup mrgunsngear,
I went with the avid and used it the other day, it works well and it has just about every size of scraper you would need. Firing pin, inside carrier, back end of bolt, bolt face, extractor and lug scraper. Worked out great.

I've only ever used the CAT-M4 and a shell casing.  The CAT-M4 works, plus I met the guy that makes / came up with it.  He seems like a good, down to earth guy from Wyoming.

I'll always have one on my bench and range bag.  They'd make great gifts too!

Who says it has anything to do with the rifles performance? What about just making cleaning easier? Is there anything wrong with that? Use what works for you. Who cares if someone wants to pop money on a tool because it may or may not make cleaning easier?

I think it's an absolute waste of time and money.  I used to do that crap in the Corps and afterwards and then I started just hosing off with non chlorinated brake cleaner.  I like to try and help people get past obsessing over over cleaning, especially when scraping metal against metal.

I would feel most comfortable doing it with a pinched brass casing, then wipe down with CLP. Back in the day I was taught to use the eyelet out of a G.I. cleaning kit to scrape my bolt. Brass is definitely softer tho.
