I have a really nice rubber mat I bought from brownells but I am saving it for construction projects.  Right now i clean my guns on an old towell.  It works pretty well.

Fabric store...felt in a nice mottled charcoal grey.. Cheap, cut for pistol and rifle sized cleaning.
See if I can find a pic...

I have the NRA AR-15 one posted above.
I also have an Otis mat.

Simple design:

It is a 32" wide neoprene mat.

I bought a gun cleaning mat from Cabela's.  I like it as a use for a couple of time and put it in the washing machine.  It's so much better than keeping a stack of newspapers to clean my guns.

I use an old white beach towel so that way you can see all the parts very easily.

Another vote for used bath / beach towels and old shirts.  Little to no cost (especially if they've already outlived their original use service life) and can be tossed in the washing machine.  Sometimes I put a plastic trash bag under them if I think cleaner might soak through.
