Hello, I am new to both this forum and rifles (I consider myself VERY knowledgeable in handling pistols). I want an AR-15 really badly but I am making myself be patient with my first purchase of an AR, which would also be my first purchase of a rifle of any kind. One piece of concern is the time is takes to clean an AR. I will not lie and say I am a fan of cleaning my guns (which is why I prefer HKs, Sigs and Glocks since you can shoot them thousands of times without misfires) but I will absolutely sit down and clean my guns when needed. I guess my questions are as follows...how many rounds do you rifle, specifically AR experts, go through before cleaning your guns? and how long does it take to clean your rifles? My wife is not going to be happy when I buy it so I don't want to hear her mouth anymore than I have to when I have it taken a part on the coffee table or floor with all of its parts cleaning it.
Thanks in advance for your help!!! |

Welcome to AR15.com!
Some people clean their rifles after every outing, and some people wait until they shoot 500+ rounds. It depends on how meticulous you want to be. As for actually cleaning it, check out the video Aimless posted at the top of the Maintenance & Cleaning forum, along with the tacked threads beneath it. I've spent 10 minutes doing a quick clean and up to 6 hours making every single spec of carbon disappear for an inspection. It all depends on you. Good luck getting the wife on board. As soon as my wife shot my AR, she wanted her own. |

Many many members here run into the 2000-3000 round territory doing nothing more than liberally oiling the bolt every 1000 rounds. I'm a clean freak, so I clean every part of every gun I fire when I return from the range, YMMV. Most agree that if your rifle is properly lubed, any good AR should go to 1000 rds before you have to worry about cleaning anything. |
