Because water displacement =/= lubrication

I have been using it on guns and tools for over 30+ years, and never a problem. Now sit back and wait for the haters.

Nothing. They use WD-40 at the MG shoot at Knob Creek on all the fun stuff.I prefer rem oil but have used WD on my guns.

With that straw nozzle and the fact that it is just short in power to penetrating oil, it is awesome....whenever I have a stuck pully, bolts that are stuck... a spritz and left alone for about 2 hours to get thru will do the job.

i have always figured by using all these fancy oils and lubracations and stuff i am pampering my gun and what happens when something like a shtf thing happens and you cant order your cleaning supplies off the net? wd40 is in everyones garage

I used to use wd40 all the time on my shotguns, never had a problem

Yup, WD gets used alot at MG shoots.  Just about everyone's got a can, myself included.  It does two things well for MG shooters.  First, when crud builds up to a level, far beyond the imagination of most arfcommers, where the gun cycles poorly WD will get carbon back into suspension and allow you to keep going before definitive cleaning/lube.  Second, WD is great short-term protection for metal surfaces when a downpour happens.  Third, it's inexpensive and ubiquitous.........

Let's review basic WD +/-s:  Excellent - water displacement, powder/crud solvent, price.  Decent - preservative.  Poor - lube.

Could not have said it better than Sam.

One more thing to add though it that it attracts a tremendous amount of dirt and grime.  So most people do not recommend it for things like a carry gun.

I use it for a powder solvent for cleaning and it's about the best I've used and way cheaper than Hoppes.
