I took the new M4 out for a spin today and blew through a LOT of ammo. I stopped after around 200 rounds, field stripped the whole thing, lubed up the whole BCG, and back again for another 200 or so, probably 300.

How often should I lube the rifle while I'm on the range? About how many rounds?

depends on what you are using as lube. something like rem-oil is useless. i use weapon shield, it's a tad bit more more viscous than breakfree CLP and clings better in my opinion. and i'd say skip the range cleaning and just clean it when you get home.

I usually hit mine with a shot of spray Break-Free CLP every 200 rounds or so. If I go much over 500 rounds in one session, I'll pull the BCG and wipe it down before reoiling.

I'll squirt a small amount of oil into the 2 holes on the side of the bolt carrier (over the bolt) without disassembling the rifle at all if it is a high round count day/event.  This usually occurs during a course, and I do so about every 300-500 rounds.  I routinely shoot a 1000 rounds without cleaning or otherwise lubing an ar15 during training/practice.

Agree with 3-500 rds..I use FP10 and have never had an issue.

I got a big bottle of REM-OIL...... it's great for my 870 trigger group.

For my AR, I have a couple cans of aresol CLP that I keep in the range bag. When things start to get a little sticky I just give the BGC a shot of that.

Lubing every 200 rounds is a bit of a waste and means you need to use a better lube.  Would hate for you to take a carbine class with that regiman as you'd miss most of teh material while you're off cleaning and lubing.  I clean my bolt and oil up with Mobil 1 and its good for 1k minimum.  It doesn't burn off nor run all over the place making a mess.  Plus its cheaper than CLP.  I never quite understood teh concept of using a lube thats also a cleaner and preservative........just strikes me as it would never be good at one thing since its trying to be three different things.

I don't consider 200, 300, or even 500 rounds to be a "LOT."  At about 500 I'd probably put a few drops of oil on the bolt and carrier.  Breaking it down at 200-300 rounds is kinda overkill.

This.  I add a few drops of oil after ~500 rds or once a day if I'm out for multiple days in a row.  I don't pull the carrier out or anything, just pull the charging handle and put some drops on the bolt and a drop or two on the carrier.

There's really no need to field strip your AR at the range to lube her. I just put some Slip2000 EWL in the two gas exhaust holes in the carrier and then hit the bolt lugs and i'm GTG.  As stated above lubing at 200 rnds is a waste.

I fired 3,0000 rounds out of my RRA AR over 4 days of poping prairie dogs in South Dakota. My AR was lubed with a generous coat of Slip 2000 gun oil and not touched once till after the hunt. It was still nice and wet, FILTHY but nice and wet. Not a single malfuction either. Slip 2000 products are the cats meow!
