I hear alot of guys talking about using Gunzilla ( Or any other clp) to lube and Hoppe's to clean.
I'm wondering how many of you guys use a "CLP" to do everything? |

Breakfree CLP is a decent multi purpose product. Not the best at any particuliar application, but far from the worst.
If I were leaving the house for an extended period of time, it is what I would choose to carry. For range use, I lube with straight canola oil, from the grocery store. For in between use, I mix the canola oil with Dexron III ATF. |

I've always used Breakfree CLP. I suppose that there are better things out there, but I tend to go with what I know. I gotta buddy though that just switched to Gunzilla. He swears that it's the greatest thing out there since sliced bread. I suppose one of these days I'll give it a try. |

BF CLP G96 as posted Ryco brand (forget the number) used to sold as Rem Niro CLP. are 3 US approved CLPs for use on the M16/M4 family of weapons. eta fro me a CLP must Clean Lube and Protect. a lot of oils not sold as CLPs will do this. |

Some may, others may not. And I'm guessing there are very few that perform as well (specifically as a CLP) as the brands you listed. |

I was cleaning my AR's BCG today, because the bolt carrier (but no other BCG parts) has had some cosmetic rust on it, and i figured I would try to get rid of it. Of course, i figured i may as well clean all the other BCG parts while i was at it, and when i removed the extractor, i found that the extractor O-ring is turning into goo, and sticking to a paper towel i was using to clean with. It could not have been built-up carbon, as this rifle, especially the BCG has been cleaned several times in less than 400 rounds fired, and this stuff was MUCH too gooey to be carbon. Extractor parts are stock Oly, CLP used is Gunzilla. The ring is intact, only the surface of it turned into sludge, but this is a WTF moment, and i don' t think it should happen. Maybe the O-ring was some crappy, non mil-spec material, and FWIW i was intending to get an extractor upgrade set from either BCM or Spike's before the next time i shoot it anyway. Has anyone else ever seen this? if so, what brand extractor parts, and what lube did you use? Quoted:
One thing I discovered about Gunzilla––- I unknowingly set my tv remote down on a patch soaked in it. The patch melted the plastic of the remote and glued itself to the underside. Keep gunzilla away from plastic without testing it first. Quoted:
I discovered the same thing. Gunzilla and some plastics are a BAD COMBO! Extractor O-ring turning into goo?!WTF?!?! |
I tend to just use Break Free CLP because it works well on most things... However since I started using my AR more often I've had to scrape carbon buildup off of my bolt even using the BF CLP quite liberally, so I think I'm going to start using something stronger on my BCG but other than tough jobs like that I say using CLP on everything 80% of the time is GTG. Besides when shooting old surplus through the Russian pole arm (the real reason I first started using CLP) it gets rid of those darn corrosive salts.

Last night before leaving for work ( I work 3rd shift ) I filled a cap off a Dr Pepper with Gunzilla. I put an o-ring from a generic o-ring kit I have in it. 13 hours later I'm home and so far the o-ring seems fine. O-rings are made from different material. To get a true test you need to use a O-ring that you will use in the rifle/carbine. Some are much more chemical restant than others. I dont run O-rings, never saw the need. |

80% of my cleaning is done with weapons shield CLP. Same here..... For extremely filthy bores or heavy carbon fouling I'll use Hoppe's No.9 to soak the bores or as a dunkit solution for heavy carbon on parts.Namely cleaning up a weapon that has had a bunch of Wolf ammo ran through it. Otherwise I just wipe down the weapons parts with Weapon Shield, scrub with a tooth brush, wipe the displaced fouling off and relube.GTG |

g96 ftmfw!! best stuff EVAR depends on What G96 product your talking about. I've had G96 spray oil crack plastics (non firearms use) on me. i use g96 clp for everything from my ar to my cannondale and have never had a negative experience. damn good stuff imo i love break free as well, but love that sweet smell of g96 what king of plastic and what product did you use |
| I've always used plain old break-free. There are always gallons of it laying around my unit. I've seen military weapons go through years and years of abuse and high round counts without major issues. We even use straight CLP to punch the tubes on our 155mm howitzers. |
| When I left active duty in 1985, I had several large bottles of Break Free CLP. Still using the original bottles on all my firearms. One bottle is about 1/4 full and the other is maybe 1/2. But then again, I have not had the opportunity to shoot much but the fever is hitting again. |
