I am getting the dreaded "Drip" of oil slowly migrating down (gravity ) by storing in a safe.  For over 35 years I have used oil (various types) with excellent results but they were shotguns or a 22LR plinker.

Whats the take on using grease (whats the best?) instead of oil to keep barrel up long guns (AR's) lubed for long term storage?

I should have mentioned that I do shoot from time to time so I am not storing them for years but rather random amount of months.  I clean them well and lube.  A few months later (sometimes 6 months) I will take one out to the range.  Most of the oil have migrated away so that is why I have considered grease as an option.  Good links though.

I like to grease up the internals (TW25B or Shooter's Choice High-Tech), but use Birchwood Casey's Barricade on the exterior & inside the bore. It goes on wet but dries off and doesn't migrate. I've yet to develop rust on anything that it's applied to.

My grandfather had a M1 Grand for who knows how long stripped apart with all the metal parts in a long metal box and put enough motor oil in it to cover all the stuff, the stock was put in another box with a cigar humidor thingy and a few cigars. I say we don't know how long because until my dad and I were going through the stuff after grandfather died did we even know it existed. All of the parts looked like they were brand new, which is basically the case, I doubt the gun saw more then a few hundred rounds in its lifetime.

I have a Colt 1911 that I coated with axle grease and wrapped in cloth sitting in storage, I expect the gun to be in good shape in 20+ years as long as it remains untouched.
