Not sure if this is the right area or not...did a search and couldn't find anything.

Got a new dust over ordered and want to know the easiest way to get the old one off and the new one on.

Heard stuff about taking thte barrel off, and gas rod...sounds WAY over my head at this point.

I figured with this brain trust on here, someone knows of a simple way to get this done.

Thanks!

Correct. Some will come right off, some will need the barrel removed..

right...soooo...how do you know?

Got a really good gunsmith right up the road, who has been real helpful with things. Would it be best to just take it to him?

There should be a little snap ring that keeps the rod from coming out without removing the barrel.
No, I don't think the ring will come off or go back on.

This is a very simple task that doesn't require removal of the barrel.

1. Push the hinge pin as far forward as you can (only a few thou).
2. Carefully remove the C clip.
3. Carefully slide the hinge pin out to the rear.

Reverse the instructions to reassemble.

okay that's what I was thinking, so the little clip that holds the pin in place is re-useable correct?

so the spring won't lose tension, or come shooting off?

Want to be prepared for the worst.

Ever see a spring that didn't come shooting off? Just cup your hand over it, it's not a big spring

One more tip:  To keep everything lined up while re-inserting the spring, just slide the plastic straw from an aerosol can of something - WD40, Brake Cleaner, whatever - in from the front, and get all the parts in place and the spring set, then let the hinge pin push it out as you insert it.

Got it replaced...took a little work, and some trial and effort to get the spring back on right. Like a moron, I forgot to take a good look at it before I took it off, so I had to sit and think about it for a minute and do some figuring about the mechanics of it before it went back on.  But it all works right, so I'm happy.

Thanks for the help!

One of the greatest tools available today is the digital camera !  I use mine  ( with the macro setting if required ) BEFORE I take anything apart , lots of pix from all angles , comes in real handy since you can always delete or save your preferences and save the head scratchin for later. sure makes my life a lot easier. ...............swiftnsilent

The new one had "Infidel" in English and arabic machined into it.  Nothing functional...just eye candy. Saw one just like it at a gun show and thought it looked cool...nothing more than that. In all actualality, it makes no sense really, since it is on a 24" varmint upper, but screw it...it looks neat.
