I was reading a Field Manual on the M16 (written in 1986). Its says to lube the chamber lightly w/ CPL. Would lubing the chamber w/ CPL make it run more reliable or cause more problems? Come to think about it, no carbon will get built up in that area, so it wouldn't hurt, right?

CLP would probably work better

The only reason one would have to lube the chamber and bore is to protect it against corrosion during storage.  Any lube in the bore and chamber should be removed prior to shooting.

There should not be any lubricant in the chamber or bore, except for storage.
