Just follow the directions, make sure you get all of it out and follow up with a light coat of CLP/oil, and you'll be fine.

I use butches on all my barrels. From my experience, it will probably kill you before it damages your barrel. Its best to clean your barrel on a very windy day.

According to the Rifle Maintainance Handbook by Chris Christian, ammonia is a great barrel cleaner. It used to get a bad reputation because people would claim that it damaged barrels. This is true and can happen if you let the ammonia dry on the metal. It will cause cracks. But it is perfectly safe to use as a cleaner if you let it soak and clean it out before you let it dry out. I don't think he mentioned its effects on chrome based barrels though.

I have even used Windex (high ammonia content) on my black powder rifle and it worked great.
