Hey all...
Althoough I am newly registered, I have been lurking and reading AR15.com for a about a year. I have never posted because I have never had anything to share or add to the conversation because I am new to AR-15's. I recently bought a Colt LE6920 and have had a blast over the last week shooting and accessorizing to make it uniquely my own. I have gone through the cleaning process a couple of times and have not had any real concerns... except for magazines. I am using PMags exclusively (window type, not the new revision). How often should I be cleaning my mags? Is there a loadout/shot count you use? Visual inspection? Whenever you encounter a problem? When the force tells you to? I will probably be using the polymer safe GunScrubber product when I do clean them and Hoppes # 9 for lube. I would also like to know your opinion on these products for this task. Thanks in advance.... The "Boz" |
| If its just from shooting at the range, pull a blue shop towel through them about once a year. Hoppes 9 does not go in mags, especially plastic ones. Keep those dry inside. I would also not use gun scrubber in them either. If you're talking mud and sand and stuff, hot soapy water and let air dry a couple of days before putting back together. |

I clean and lube the springs every time I shoot. I have had springs rust on me before so that I why I oil them. It probably keeps wear down a little too. this really isn't necessary, and actually isn't recommended. It is when you have hundreds of mags sitting for long periods of time like I do. Plus I shoot in all weather conditions. Last year we were shooting in the mud and rain. My buddy's Glock 22 mag springs (which he never cleans) had a light coating of rust on them when he opened them up to get the mud out the next day. Mine had oil on them and no rust even with mud in the mag. I never have problems with light coating of oil in my mags. |
