I use the nylon coated J. Dewey Original.

If you are using a proper bore guide and the proper size jags and patches so that your rod isn't bending in your bore, then I'd recommend using an uncoated steel rod. The idea here is that nothing can embed itself into the rod (such as is possible with coated rods) and if there is incidental contact between the rod and the bore there is nothing abrasive on the rod. Either way, get one with a rotating handle so that the rod can rotate as it goes down the bore and you're not forcing the jag over the lands.

One that fits well in the rifle. Not a "one size fits all" that rattles around and doesn't really guide anything.

Go to the Dewey website...30 inch rod for 20 inch barrel AR's work great.  Shorter for the 16's but you still want to go all the way through the barrel..
You need the 22-26 rod for the 223 AR's.

They have a bore guide also.  Works like a charm!
Clean with the muzzle down to let the junk run out.

Hope that helps
