I have a USGI  M16A1 cleaning kit and wanted to know how they were originally packed.  What went where?  Did the patches go in the small velcro pocket?
What kind of oil was in the bottle?
Also, where is the kit usually worn and clipped?

One more thing,  when where the belt kits used and when were the buttstock kits used?

I think you have officially analyzed that kit more than any GI ever has.

I have never seen the clip used, and people stick whatever they want in the small velcor part - often the brushes to keep them from getting stuck to everything else.

To my knowledge the thing never was issued as a complete set.  I have always seen the various parts come in sealed bags and then the sub part put in the green pouch given out by supply/arms room NCO. There is no packing list or load plan for this pouch so things go where they will fit.  Someone may have taken some pouches and made kits out of them and then issued but just have not seen it that way nor have I ever seen anyone wear one.  Usually stuck in a pack or a squad box till needed.

I have never seen a packing list or diagram for the cleaning kit. I always put the brushes in the small top pocket, and everything else in the bottom. I never carried it on my belt. It was in the ruck or a cargo pocket. The belt pouch and butt stock kit are identical, except for the carrying aspect. The butt stock kit fits in a cone shaped sleave. Both are still in the system, as is the Otis kit.

I served in the USMC during the late 1980's to the early 1990's.  I was issued the buttstock kit.  The triangular sleeve could hold the rods, the all-purpose brush, the chamber brush, the bore brush, a bottle of CLP and a small amount of bore patches.

I did not see the pouch type kits issued during my service.

I have a universal type Field Kit marketed by Kleen-Bore (www.kleen-bore.com) which is similar to the pouch kit you have pictured.  I've augmented it with an additional rod section (for longer barrels) and a selection of bore brushes.  I purchased my kit from a local gun store several years after I was honorably discharged.

The triangular buttstock kit can remain inside the rifle (when you have the rifle, you also have the kit).  The pouch kit has more room to store things.  Each kit has its merits.

Good luck and enjoy your rifle.
Sincerely,
MrCraigCraig

Nobody in either of my units 1/5 Cav, 2/30 Inf kept the kits in the buttstock. We usually had a "squad kit" in a .50 cal ammo can. Personally I kept a belt pouch in my ruck sack. We didn't have those little bottles, we had the larger bottles and I kept a 4th rod so I can use it from the chamber end.

Buy replacement CLP bottles because the brushes always poke holes in them. I would almost declare the stock kit as useless because it's harder than hell to fit everything in. The belt kits also make better sense for carbines.
