I get a shot of gas in the face (near charging handle) when firing my AR. I'm pretty sure my gas key is staked properly. I have noticed that after a couple of hundred rounds, it's not as bad compared to the first few rounds after a cleaning.
When I do clean my AR, I clean the bolt/BCG using Quib's OMS bath and brush ALL of the carbon off the entire bolt. After lubing up the bolt and slapping it all back together, my bolt doesn't pass the gas ring check (bolt pulled out and supporting BCG weight.) I haven't tried this test when the BCG is dirty. What do you think? |

I always thought the bolt test was hold the BCG by the carrier and if the bolt falls out while vertical them you fail. I've always heard to extend the bolt, and lay whole BCG on the bolt face on a table. If the gas rings are shot, it will not hold the weight of the BCG, and it will "collapse" onto the bolt. |

That looks like shit... .I don’t have a problem with gas blowback on any of my rifles, but this isn’t a bad "quick and simple" method to at least consider. I think black RTV would be more presentable. And a few “tricks” on the use of RTV might help as well. - A wax like Johnson’s Paste Wax or even automotive wax, applied to the rear of the receiver as a “mold release” will help keep the RTV from sticking to the upper receiver. - Dish soap applied to your finger tip can help in smoothing out the excess RTV between the CH and receiver. - Apply a bit more RTV than necessary, and after it has cured trim away the excess with a razor blade. This might provide a cleaner looking appearance. |

RTV also comes in black for the serious ATAS guys. |
