Should I break in, and clean the barrel of my chrome CMMG any different that I might with a typical barrel? also, what is the best way to break in a chrome barrel? 5 - 1 shot groups, cleaning between each group 2-3 5 shot groups, cleaning between 1 - 10 shot groups cleaning between? or do you guys do it another way? ive never had to break in a barrel before so i dont want to mess anything up doing it incorrectly |
I've heard it is "optional" and "recommended". Armalite had a service bulletin out on it or something. I saw it detailing a process very similar to what is described above. The idea is that the machining process that engraves the grooves leaves behind tiny imperfections, pits and machine marks. "Breaking the barrel in" fills in these pits slowly and uniformly and smooths out the machining marks uniformly as well. Of course a copper bullet flying through there at high speed administers its own form of "smoothing out", but removing any fouling between each shot allows the barrel to bullet contact to be consistent shot after shot...or so the logic goes...I don't know, I do it just because if it helps at all, then I want all the help I can get to make the barrel accurate and last as long as possible. It is INSANELY time consuming though... |
