Should the buffer/spring retainer stay down when you push it?  Every time I've removed my spring and buffer, the spring is a pain to pull out, because it gets caught on the retainer, as each "rung" tries to go over it.

It's spring loaded and unless you are holding it down, it should always be sticking out.  Just sort of wriggle th spring up and down as you pull it out.

No. If it did stay down that would defeat it’s purpose.

As you pull the buffer spring out, just pull slightly up as well. The buffer spring lightly ratcheting over the retainer as you pull it out will not hurt a thing.

Why remove it?  Unless removing the stock I see no need to remove mine.
