Over the years Ive changed how I clean my weapons but I was wondering if I could get some opinions and other ways everybody cleans.  Most times when I clean a firearm, it doesnt involve ANY solvents.  AR's, my Sig carry piece, and my ruger all get treated the same way.  I keep an AK74 cleaning kit with a pull-through brush in my bag and use it for all of these.  When I leave the range I five the bore a good swipe while everything is still hot and when I get home I disassemble, wipe, and re-oil all parts.  Does anyone else not use solvents for cleaning a gun?  Ive never run into an instance where I wasnt able to just wipe away residue.  When swabbing the bore I use a bit of CLP on a patch to clean and inspect the bore (it always ends up clean and shiny all through).  My Ar as well as others all come out looking perfectly clean.  Am I doing anything wrong by not using a solvent?

I used to use brake cleaner, but decided that cleaning off all the protective oils in non-moving parts was counterproductive.

Depends on where you live, what the climate is like, what you're feeding the piece, and how anal you are about various bore fouling agents affecting potential accuracy and the weapon's service life.

Your method is one of the more minimalist I've seen/read of lately.

%50 ATF/ %50 Kerosene is the cleaner I use. Cheap and stinky, but it really works great. Then Mobil one mixed with some Lanolin to lube. I gave up spending tons of money on lubes and cleaners. I use these and never had a ftf, discoloring of any parts etc..
Ill tell you another thing about the Mobil one, I wish you guys who use this stuff would have sold me on it earlier!!!
When I use the Mobil 1 before my range trip, after I am done shooting and get home after the 45 minute drive all I do is wipe off my bolt, reciever etc. and you can actually see the oil is still wet and has not dried, it is black, but that is a good thing and means it allows the carbon to stick to it and not my AR!
I have never seen this happen with any other libe, oil, CLP, cleaner, whatever.

I havent been using it too long, but it is slick as hell.

If you are not anal about cleaning youre AR try some Mobil 1. It doesnt dry or let the carbon stick like other lubes. I was very anal about cleaning the inside of my AR and bolt carrier, but since I switched to Mobil all I do now is wipe it all off. The carbon sticks to the Mobil and is still wet when I get home from the range (which is 45 min away)

As far as the bore goes, I try to run a wet patch through at the range before I leave(%50 ATF/%50 Kerosene) Then wet patch again, Wipe down all other parts, dry patch about 5 times. Wet patch again, dry patch till fairly clean. I am still very anal about the bore.

In a nut shell.............

Barrel, Chamber and Locking Lugs: Break-Free Powder Blast, BF Foam Bore Cleaner and BF CLP.

Bolt and carrier: Mixture of odorless mineral spirits and BF CLP. Let these parts sit while I tend to the rest of the rifle.

Rifle Exterior: One inch paint brush lightly coated with CLP. Brush away dust and dirt, then wipe down with a black t-shirt.
