Will carb cleaner take off copper? Will it melt plastic parts?
8/30/2007 3:54:37 PM EDT
[#1]
Carb cleaner will not remove copper deposits. Non-chlorinated brake cleaner or carb cleaner has proven so far to be safe on most plastics. But, just to be safe, try it first on an inconspicuous area.

I personally wouldn’t take the chance. If you want to flush out the Glocks frame try mineral spirits. Dry with compressed air, followed by re-lubing.

The real question is - why are you concerned about cleaning a glock?

carb cleaner WILL melt many plastics. i have used it for years since it leaves no residue like brake cleaner and is cheaper.

that said i have yet to find a pistol it will bother. won't hurt a glock i used it on mine for a long time.

I didn’t have the nerve to try CC or BC on my XD9.

I've used chlorinated brake cleaner on my XD 40 in the past with no problems.

You have a Glock, Oh my!

DEchlorinated brake cleaner has not damaged my Glock frames, it does however remove the finish from AK lower handguards.

+1

I've got about 5k rounds through my G19 and I think I've cleaned it maybe...twice?  And one of them was the initial cleaning.  No degradation of accuracy or performance

ALWAYS!!!

they a smal amount of carb cleaner on a non conspicuoas surfacr first. i spray it on a qtip and rub it inside the handgurads or magwell. it will distrot the plastic a tiny bit if it's not compatible. it's usually things like cheap handguards that have issues. most handgun frams won't be a problem.

it will also remove crappy paint finishes so always test it first.

I clean my Glocks with hot water and dish soap. Use the hottest water you can get out of the tap, a toothbrush and dish detergent. No worries about damaging the plastic frame.
By the way, I clean slide and all the same way. If you use real hot water and let the parts get hot, they will dry almost instantly. You can use a hair dryer if they don't dry quickly on their own.
