What do you guys think about bore snakes, the good? the bad? the ugly?

My personal opinion, ok for the field. But for back at the ranch, I’m an old fashioned rod, jag n’ patch guy.

I'm with QUIB on this one.  There's no substitute for a good cleaning rod, jag and patch.

They do work, and I use them at the range, just before, and just after a shooting session.

I wouldn't trust one as the ONLY cleaning tool, but between real cleanings they do a good job.

If you wrap some paper towel at the end of the loop it works like patches.

Good for pulling oil through your bore from time to time if not fired.  Easy to use and no break down of weapon needed.

I use a Dewy and I like my Otis Kit , it cleans rifle to shotgun.

If I spend a day at the range shooting I will run a boresnake through it during breaks just to keep it from getting too bad.  But I would never consider it clean after using a boresnake.

ETA: they are handy to have on hand

I use both.  After a trip to the range I give the Black Rifle a good old fashion cleaning.  The way Daddy taught me.  Then to finish it off I run with a Bore Snake.

I currently build a kit that hold all my Bore Snake for a  cals.

Just my 2 cents.

For coating the bore with CLP, I use these DIY “bore mops”. Made from 100% wool yarn and nylon cord, I keep them lightly soaked in CLP and stored in a zip lock bag. A quick pull through and the bore is protected for storage.

The Patch Worm works great for pulling patches through the bore and their felt bottons are good for a quick clean at the range:  patchworm.com/

I use the Otis kit for pulling a brush if needed at the range only.  A coated rod, brush and jag is the ticket for serious cleaning back at the ranch.

Bore Snake is the final product through the barrel, albeit wetted down with CLP, in my case Gunzilla, but go with your favorite CLP product here. It gets rid of patch fibers that sometimes break off in the barrel. I've never bothered to run a dry patch through the barrel right before shooting. I've heard folks say to do it to get rid of oil in the barrel, but I've never done so, and it hasn't ever been a problem.

They work well for me.

But also have a traditional one piece rod for serious work.
