Is a 24 inch Dewey cleaning rod long enough for a RR 20 inch upper , next size is 36 inches and would seem way to long. Thanks Guys

24" is going to be way short.

Check out the "22CF 30 .22 cal.& up 30’’ Coated rod, ball bearing handle (M 16 20’’ barrel) - $25.95" at Dewey's web site

It'll be too short.  I use the 30" Dewey service rifle rod, which is perfect for a 20" or shorter.

I use a 36" Dewey rod with the male threads.

An important note about the Dewey 'Service Rod' is that it is female threaded to accept standard rod accessories.  I and a number of others have found that the coating on those don't last as long.  A few have had better luck though.

Female threaded accessories are harder to find, but they're out there.  Brownells is a good source.

I use a tipton 26" (I believe it's 26") cleaning rod for my 16" carbine, and it's just right. Thus, a 24" for a 20" will be too short. Keep in mind the length is not just for the barrel, but also the rest of the upper-receiver, since you enter from the chamber-side. The rod will have to be the length of the barrel (and flash-hider), as well as the "BCG channel."

(Edited for clarity)

so your 26" is just right for you 16" carbine with, or without your hider attached?
i am thinking of getting a bore tech 25" rod for my 14.5" carbine with perm phantom.  i measured from hider to receiver and that length is 24".  i should not need to get the 30", but some reassurance would make me feel better.

Don't make the mistake I made. The rod needs to pass thru a 16" barrel (or whatever you have), a couple inces of compensator, and 8 or 9 inces of bore guide. If you've got a set-up with a add-on solvent port, that's a couple more inches. No way a 24" rod will reach. Get the 36".

thanks for the advise.  i figured as much once i saw how much the guide sticks out past the receiver.  the distance between my flash hider to the rear of the receiver is just under 24" (14.5" barrel with perm phantom).  i figure another couple inches for the guide and maybe a few more for the solvent port = ~29"?  i got the dewey 30".  we'll see.

Didn't know they made a 30". I didn't see it on their site. Not coated anyway. 30" should be fine.

here it is
4th one down the list:
22CF 30 .22 cal.& up 30’’ Coated rod, ball bearing handle (M 16 20’’ barrel)

thanks for the reassurance.  i was just on the hunt for shaving every last inch to avoid bending.  but, like everything else i do, i overkilled the research, prep and hopefully outcome.  it's all about winning the title of overkill king!

That is the female threaded 'service rod' mentioned above.  Like I said, it's much easier to find male threaded accessories for the female rods, but there's a trade off in durability.  I had one like that and it only lasted one highpower season.  Following the advice of others I picked up a male threaded rod and that one is now going on its sixth season and is only now starting to show coating wear.

36"

Check the site. It has suggestions IIRC.

Since I bought my Dewey 36 and a Bore Guide Cleaning has been a lot easier!!!!

Wow, sorry it's taken so long. This is WITH the A2 style flash-hider installed. Keep in mind that the flash-hider on a 16" is a tad bit shorter than the 14.5"--just a tad. Not enough to really make a difference.
