Should you twist the chamber brush to clean behind the lugs?

Also: What is the point of removing the hand guards during cleaning?
Are you supposed to do something to the gas tube?

Thanks in advance!

TWIST TO CLEAN THE CHAMBER AND LUGS.

Removing the handguards: I do this only to put a light coat of oil on the parked steel to keep the barrel from rusting.

I half way insert the chamber brush, then with aerosol CLP and the spray tip straw, I spray a bit of CLP into the chamber. Next I fully insert the chamber brush and twist it around a few times. Brake Cleaner comes next, flushing out the chamber and washing the results out the bore.

I remove the HG’s as the others stated, to brush down the barrel with a old 1” paintbrush lightly coated with CLP.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks!!

I must have had a crappy brush. On the first turn, it came apart. Some place I saw a brush that was molded, not swaged. I will look.

CLP on the barrel: I read a recommendation from a guy that in Iraq not to oil the barrel. He said that the oil would burn off in a fire fight (extended I assume). The smoke will blind you for some time, burning the hell out of your eyes.

First, download a copy of the TM. It's not perfect, but it's a damm good place to start.

As far as CLP on the outside of the barrel, it's my rifle, I paid for it, not Uncle Sugar. I live in Oregon and steel will rust out on you if it's not protected. In Nevada, rust isn't so much of a problem, usually. CLP on a rifle barrel will burn off, and I've done that a few times myself. It's never effected my shooting enough for me to notice. BSW

Only time I ever saw that happen was on the M-60 qualification range! Never had it happen on a civilian range with my AR, and like I said.......

To get that much smoke would be more than lightly oiling the barrel.  Lightly oiled, means barely visible to the eye.  Enough to prevent rust, but not enough to smoke you out.

Some exhaust manifold paint or one of the gun finishes would also work well in keeping the outside of the barrel from rusting, and you wouldn't need to remove the handguards as often.  Just once in a while to dust off the barrel, or to remove any dirt that you can see through the vent holes.
I'd strongly suggest doing this if you ever get rails too.  Harder to clean under those.

Not much rust here. The dry is actually a problem at times. You have to want to rust something by soaking it in water.

5-7" total annual precipitation - rain and snow -> 1/2 of that is snow.

Using grease / oil just attracts dirt.

Well in your case, you don't really have to do much.  Just take them off every few cleanings to dust off the barrel.  Or just paint it sand/khaki/tan so you don't even notice the dust at all.
