lately I have been using diesel to clean my AR and other guns.  I have found it works great. It loosens up the carbon, and is a good degreaser too.  I got the idea from and old Marine buddy.
anyone else use diesel?

there are much safer methods.

I use turpentine mixed with a little Hoppes #9. Nowhere near as stinky as diesel or as oily.

If you are referring to diesel's flammability, most gun cleaning products are also flammable petroleum products, likely more flammable (lower vapor point) than diesel.  Ever tried throwing a lit match into a container of liquid diesel?  I've done it for fire hazard training at work....it extinguishes the match every time.  No way I would try the same thing with brake cleaner, or some of the other high-vapor items people use to clean guns all the time.

I used diesel in the past to clean gun parts....picked up the habit from an Uncle that does custom gun work (pretty much handmade 1911's).  He still uses diesel for gun cleaning and, on occasion, unleaded gasoline to clean lube off resized brass cases.  I think diesel worked fine for a cleaner, but now I use wally world low-odor mineral spirits and heavy gloves for dip-cleaning parts.  Like QUIB said...diesel is more oily.

I guess it's much the same as using Hoppes #9 with it's kerosene base.

Yep, about 35% of Hoppes #9 is Kerosene.

Old thread but I didn't know Hoppes had Kerosene in it. I gues I should have read the label

not the  flammability. unleaded gas is even worse benzine is not good for the insides of your system.

I use Mpro7 which is about as safe as Dawn and water.

Diesel and kerosene (k1) are often recommended by factory service manuals as cleaning solutions for O-Ring chains found on motorcycles.

I love the smell of diesel, I could swim in the stuff. Diesel makes me think of heavy machinery! Heavy duty industrial stuff!

I probably would not want to use it on my AR though, and have people at the range wonder... "whats that smell". JK

Why don't you mix that diesel with an equal amount of automatic transmission fluid, mineral spirits, and acetone(1:1:1:1 ratio) so then you have Ed's Red?  Ed's Red is without a doubt the cheapest and best working cleaner out there.  I've been using it for about a year and I'd never go back to anything commercial.
