Well I have had my 20" A4 setup for a little over a year now and I am still not sure I am properly lubing the bolt and the carrier.

So here is what I usally do, pull the carrier out of the upper, take some aerosol CLP spray it on everything and let it sit a few minutes. Then I take a cloth and wipe it dry, take some CLP in the dripper bolttle and make sure all surface area on the carrier has a good ammount of CLP on it (enough that it wont dry up in 10 minutes). Next I take the bolt out either A soak it in hot water then drip CLP on it and wipe it so I get a nice thin layer of CLP on it while removing some of the build up. Or I will just spray the bolt in aerosol CLP and wipe it dry then lube it with CLP. They I may procede to take the extractor off and swab it out with CLP on a q-tip. Now often do you guys remove the extractor and remove the gunk?

Now this is where I get a bit confused as I do see any of this mentioned on the net or in any of the factory manuals. When I remove the bolt and I look into its home in the carrier and its nice and black, do you guys take a cloth and put some CLP on it and make it all shiny? Also does this area need a light layer of CLP, or will the layer I put on the bolt hold it over? Then I will rotate the bolt so that I am looking away from the bolt, and put some CLP on a cloth and put a nice thin layer of CLP on the inside of the bolt carrier.

How does this sound for cleaning the bolt/carrier area?

Thanks

The hot water thing is not wise... this is not a black powder musket you know. Water wont remove much anyway - if you are going to soak, try Hoppes #9. Other than that, plenty of CLP and a bronze brush to scrub away as much of the carbon as you can from inside of the carrier and outside of the bolt. Not so you can eat off it - just to stop excessive buildup.

Actually, I only bother to strip the bolt assy about once a year cause I'm lazy... rest of the time, I just wipe the outside with CLP and drip some down where the bolt enters the carrier and work the bolt a few times.

Well the water thing was recommended by another member here I have only done it a few times. Now I don't really scrape the carbon off as its been said round here quite a bit that it is self limiting, I am just wondering if I am giving enough lube in the right places.

For cleaning the BCG (and the rest of the gun), I find it easier to start with a dry rag, wiping everything down to remove most of the gunk before applying solvents.  Makes less of a mess.   And it sounds like you're putting too much CLP on when you're done cleaning.  As far as the outer portion of the bolt carrier, you really only need to put oil on the four rails as those are the only contact points.  More than that and you'll have a big mess as all that excess oil attracts dust and carbon.
