Took the AR to the range this morning and have a problem. With an empty mag the bolt with catch and stay open. With a loaded mag the bolt won't catch and just wants to continue forward to the closed position. Came home took it apart and cleaned it, but it is still doing it. The bolt catch button =will work, but you have to press on it. Any ideas on what is wrong? thanks |

During the reload sequence, after ejecting the empty mag, your BCG should still be in the locked back position. When inserting a new (loaded) mag, the BCG should stay locked back until you depress the bolt release button. What exactly is going wrong with your rifle? Are you trying to say that when you insert the fresh mag, the BCG closes automatically? |
| With an empty mag the bolt catches and stays open. If the bolt is closed and you pull the charging handle back the the bolt will not stay open when you have a loaded mag. It just goes forward to chamber a round and then doesn't even want to close all the way and you have to use the forward assist. |

Welcome to the AR15, that isn't a malfunction, thats the way it's suppose to work Sir he Did your rifle come with a manual? That's a good place to start getting to know your weapon. Enjoy! |
Yeah, that's how the AR is suppose to work. That's how you "cold charge" the weapon because the bolt starts off in the closed position.
Sounds like you might be riding the charging handle home. When "cold charging", pull the charging handle all the way back them simply release letting the Bolt Carrier Group solidly fly home chambering the first round. All this should be explained in the manual..... |
No manual. I bought a lower and the upper kit and put it toghether last August. I must be having a brain fart about the bolt catch then. Something just doesn't seem right. It has been a two months since I got to go to the range. Ok now I feel stupid ![]() Good news is she is really really clean now. |
