A while ago I finally tried Gun Scrubber and LOVED it, it was great to see the crap just drip off my firearms instead of trying to pick it out and still having a dirty gun. I've seen people mention many times that non-chlorinated Brake Clearner is just as good as Gun Scrubber. People always recommended the $1 Brake Cleaner over the $10 Gun Scrubber, so I picked up a couple $1 cans of "Valuecraft" from Autozone. It just doesn;t do as good a job as Gun Scrubber. Some areas got clean, but not as clean, and not all areas. An example would be the charging handle- I sprayed it down very well, but when I wiped it with the rag I still found all kinds of crap on it. Even after spraying it again the rag was black after wiping it again. Now when I used Gun Scrubber, one squirt would make it spotless and a white towel wouldn't have a mark on it. Anyone have a brand name of a Brake Cleaner that will work just as well as Gun Scrubber? Or am I stuck with the full $10 cost? |

might be that the pressure in the can is not blowing off the gunk. I don't use the brake cleaner to "clean" I use it to get rid of the oils. I don't mind the extra wipe I have to do. Brake cleaner comes in handy with rinsing out the chamber/bore of solvent. my patches come out white after fewer passes. I use the non-clorinated stuff from auto-zone, $3 a can and it has some strong spraying pressure. I bought some from wally mart for $1 and it had no pressure at all. just a spritz, not a blast Stick with the BC, not worth the $10 for GS in my book |

I keep brake cleaner on hand for degreasing and occasionally blasting out the lower receiver after putting a lot of rounds down range. I also blast out the barrel and breach before going to work with the q-tips and CLP. My all in one cleaner I use for dunking and cleaning parts is a 50/50 mixture of Hoppes #9 and Turpintine or Kerosene. I keep this mixture in a jar for re-use. After cleaning with the mixture I pour it back into a glass jar where the gunk settles down to the bottom leaving clean solvent for next time. |
| I've used both and can't tell a difference. The main reason that I switched from Gun Scrubber to brake cleaner(besides cost) is because I used Gun Scrubber on a Beretta Tomcat once and it ate at the plastic grips. I've never seen brake cleaner eat any plastic. Ever since then, I've just used brake cleaner. I like to use it to clean the gas tube. People say that it's not needed but I had a clogged gas tube on an AR of mine and using brake cleaner keeps that from happening. |
