How often should you replace gas rings on an AR15?  And I am getting a lot of black soot on the neck and shoulder of spent cases, could worn gas rings cause this?

That is not being caused by worn gas rings. More than likely, it can be a mild load. Then again, some rifles just always do this. In short, don't worry about it.

As to knowing when to change gas rings, this is easy.

Take your carrier and remove the bolt cam pin, firing pin, etc. so that the bolt slides freely out of the carrier. Put the bolt back in the carrier and hold it with the bolt facing downward. If the bolt slides freely out of the carrier *under its own weight* then it is time for new rings.

Thanks,  I am loading 69gr. Sierra BTHP with 25.3grs. of Varget.  I have had this AR15 for over twenty years and was afraid it might be getting a little worn.
