I hear alot about gas rings going to *#!%.  Just bought a Bushy XM 15 AK Shorty and would appreciate more information on gas ring inspection.  Heard of the McFarland one piece ring. Do they have a website? Should I stick with OEM? What's a good way to check the condition of the rings? Do I just separate the upper from the lower to check the rings. I understand the spacing should be 120 degrees for each ring. Is it typical for the rings to "float" during normal use? What exactly am I looking for?

To check the gas rings for wear is easy.

Take the bolt and carrier out of the upper.
Remove the firing pin retainer and firing pin and cam pin. If the bolt slides out of the carrier under its own weight while inverted, it is time for some new rings. Make sure you lube the rings when reassembling and during cleanings. CLP or LP is good enough.

They are a solution for a problem that does not exist.

Spacing the rings has always been taught, but is not really necessry.  Once the bolt is put back into the carrier and rounds are fired, the rings move around.  Also when the bolt goes into the carrier, the rings compress a bit and the gap shrinks.  Just for grins someday, line up the gaps in the rings and put a few rounds throught it.  You should find it works just the same.

It can't hurt to replace the rings, they are cheap, but don't wear out that fast.

You don't have to remove the gas rings to clean them or the bolt.  This may cause them to wear prematurely.

YMMV.
