What rod material is best for a chrome lined bore? I was looking at a nylon coated Dewey rod from Brownells. Ever heard of Possum Hollow bore guides? Does Kroil work well for lifting out fouling, lead and copper? Does it contain ammonia? |

A coated rod is just fine for a chrome lined bore. Kroil removes carbon fouling really well, but does absolutely nothing for copper. It does nothing for copper because it has absolutely no ammonia. As for lead, if you shoot jacketed bullets in a AR you will have none. |

ABOUT KROIL: Kroil is a penetrating oil only! Benchrest shooters like a 50/50 mix of Shooter's Choice (Copper Solvent/Regular??) and Kroil. IF you want the best (READ: AGGRESSIVE) copper remover you'll have to use an ammonia based solvent (Sweet's 7.62 etc.) with NYLON brushes. *** DO NOT LEAVE IN BARREL MORE THAN 20 MINUTES!!!!*** HOPPE'S Benchrest copper solvent (They claim it's safe to leave overnight...) You will need to use some type of oil after cleaning...... ROD TYPE: Dewey's is great! GUIDE: Dewey makes one for the AR-15 so does SINCLAIR. Sinclair's is solid nylon (Just like the Possum Hallow guide you mentioned; keeps solvent and other "undesirable" matter out of your trigger group!) |

Kroil, Hoppe's, soap& water(Soap makes water "Thinner" allowing it to penetrate better), all soften and suspend carbon residue. Pick one. The brush does all the work. The patch pushes the gorp out. Possum hollow makes a good bore guide. Sinclair makes awesome bore guides from Delrin. Dewey makes the standard that all others are judged by out of aluminum. Pick one. They are all worthy! Kroil is a thin penetrating oil. Nothing more. It penetrates like mad, but does nothing for metal fouling. Also works well for air tools, sewing machines, and waterproofing leather boots. Mechanical and chemical processes are needed for metal fouling if the fouling is significant. JB bore compound, Rem Bore cleaner, Iosso, or on the chemical side(Oxidize the metal fouling!) Sweets, Shooters choice, Barnes CR-10. In a chrome bore, metal fouling with jacketed bullets is minimal. a sweep with the Sweets every 1,000 rounds should be sufficient. I don't think anyone has the time or trust to leave the Hoppe's benchrest in the bore overnight for several nights in a truly fouled bore. If so, your dedication is admirable. S-28 |
