So I went to my local toy store today looking for a coated one piece cleaning rod.  The fine gentleman behind the counter was saying that the .17 rod might be better than the .22 rod, as the .22 is a very tight fit for AR 15 type rifles.  Then he proceeds to tell me that the .17 threads don't allow for many brush and jag sizes.

Needless to say I'm confused.  What is the best rod size? Material?  Loop or jag?

I want to spend my money right the first time. Thanks in advance, any tips are appreciated.

FYI, the rifle is a Bushmaster Varminter, 24" BBL and I'd be using a 10" bore guide, so I figured a 36" rod was appropriate.

I picked up a Dewey's .22 rod when I got my Bushy DCM last year.  I haven't had any problems with the fit at all.   I also use a Dewey's bore guide.  The only adapter I had to get was for the brushes, but I think that was included with the rod when I ordedred it from dewey's.

Enjoy the rifle, they're nice.  The guy next to me was shooting a Varminter at a match this past Sunday.

Thanks for the info.  Do you have any recommendations as to a jag vs. a loop?

loop for putting a heavy coat of nitropowder solvent in the bore. jags to patch it out. bronze brush to loosen crub. you can use a jag to apply as well, but i find a jag is best suitted for clean up, over a loop.

Bushmaster sells a rod, dewy that is perfect for ar cleaning and its female thread, no adapter needed for jags and loops, unless you want to use that steel mil-spec one.

Model - 22CF-30 (30") recommended for barrels to 24" in length

That is the Dewey 'Service' rod.  I'd stay away from that one as the coating on female threaded rods doesn't last as long as the male threaded ones.  I had one that lasted less than a season.  After that I picked up a Dewey male threaded rod and it's still going after four years now.  Brownells carries female threaded jags and brushes so you won't need to use an adapter.

I must have had a bad one too he
My advice is to get the 22C36, even Dewey thinks it's better...

My local gun store dude is telling me I should use a stainless rod, not coated.  He sells both, for about the same price, so I doubt profit is the motive.  Is stainless better, or is he dense?

Think about it - why would you want to use a rod that's as hard as the barrel?  That's a sure recipe for wear, even when using a bore guide.  Proponents of SS rods worry about embedding abrasives in the rod, but that hasn't been a problem for me or anybody I know.  The coating on a Dewey is very tough, and you should be wiping the rod frequently in any case.
