| Someone chastised me for cleaning my Savage varmint rifle from the muzzle. Why is this a problem? Should I also clean my AR from the breech? |

I've always wondered about this myself. When cleaning from the breech your rod can still contact the crown as the brush/jag comes clear of the muzzle. You can catch the brush as this occurs and try and keep the rod from contacting but that is so awkward i wonder how many bother. For that matter it doesn't seem any harder to clean from the muzzle and try to keep the rod from contacting at the end your working from. There is the matter of pushing crap into your action but i always flush with brake cleaner anyway so thats not an issue. Of course muzzle damage will affect accuracy but i just question whether cleaning from the breech significantly reduces the possibility of damage. |
