Went shooting today with friend at their club.  Insisted I put a flag in chamber when not firing.  After a few mags the bolt got stuck. Was able to free the bolt and found the last round was stuck and unfired with a dimpled primer.  Tried to pry it out with a small screw driver but that didn't work.  We then noticed the end of the flag was melted.  I'm guessing there's melted plastic holding the round in.

Has anyone run in to this before?  Any ideas on how to get the round out and clean whatever plastic is melted in there?  The bolt has been removed and the upper and lower have been separated.  Here's a couple of pics of the flag.

If you have a vice and a block for the upper, put it in that pointed in as safe of a direction you can.  Stand off to the side and insert a cleaning rod or wooden dowel down the barrel till it makes contact.  Tap gently the rod end with a hammer to  pop it out.

I might first try to neutralize the primer by putting the upper in a vice, pointed down, with a bucket underneath, and pouring some penetrating oil in there.

Will it go into battery? Why not shoot it and go from there?

prime example of why i never put a chamber flag in a hot barrel

ive had guys at the local range tell me i should put it in when they call for cold range
i lock it open and leave the chamber face up so everyone can see its safe and thats it

putting plastic into something hot is never a good idea

Thanks for the replies.

I did try firing the stuck round but the bolt wouldn't go in to battery.  Will try putting the penetrating oil in then tapping out with a dowel.  Still concerned with getting the melted plastic out.

If a range won't accept the bolt locked open I think I'd rather leave than have this happen again. What a mess.

1) wood dowels that small are likely to break and cause a much bigger problem. Brass rod or cleaning rod is a much better idea.
2) the CMP flags are of a material that melts easily.

These are of a more rubbery material that does not melt as easily.

One piece cleaning rod, with cal brass jig to protect the rods end channel threads.

Also, since the cleaning rod will be used also to get a stuck spent cased out of the chamber if such happens as well, Just pick a none ball bearing handle unit as well (standard brass shim plastic T handle cleaning rod.
And remember to leave it in your gun case when not in use, and not back home in the gun room instead.

Thank you JC and Dano.  I plan to try it on Saturday.

here's a chamber flag that's not going to melt on you.

God no,since it going to lock on the extractor and going to be a worse mess trying to get it out of a dirty chamber.  Hence for match use, where you are only firing a 20 shot string, then cleaning the rig before the next string, it not too bad.  But for a rig that is going to see hundreds of rounds, then your inserting something tight
ish into the fouled chamber, not the best idea to start with (read will end up pushing fouling into the chamber with it).

If the range will not allow you to just lock the bolt back only (want some  kind of indicator), grab a spent case, pull the bolt back just enough to stick a spent case rim first in between the front of the the bolt and the barrel extension with the case mouth outwards of the ejection port, to indicate that the chamber is not loaded.

If they get pissy about the spent case not being a visual enough, then go rip a small branch off the closest tree and use it instead (with a shit load of leaves on the small branch still sticking out to the side of the rifle, to really go over the top of over exaggeration to fill there needs)..

Pure derp. A freaking branch, really? Bottom line: their range, their rules. Follow them or go find your own range to shoot on. But don't listen to this "tree branch" type crap.
