I was testing a new build and found that frequently it would fail to load a new round. I had noticed, when loading my magazines that the rounds seemed to be sitting a bit strangely. It has been about a year since I have been able to shoot my other AR15 so thought I was just out of practice. I decided to test the magazines with my other AR and am now having the same issue with both rifles. This leads me to suspect that the magazines are having issues. The odd thing is, I have 4 magazines and they are all seeming strange when I load the rounds in, and all are having the failure to feed issue. That makes me think it is not a magazine issue. Is it possible I have somehow bent all the mags in storage? I have moved residence since last firing these so they have gone through a physical move. They do not look odd upon basic inspection, though there may be something subtle I am missing. Any ideas would be helpful.
When I say the rounds sit strangely when loading a magazine, I mean the cartridge tends to point with the bullet end excessively low, and when fiddling with it, it may fall out. They just don't seem to sit in the magazines snugly as I remember or with any other firearm. Maybe mag spring replacement? It is odd this is happening with all the mags though. It makes me think I am missing something obvious that someone else can point out (aside from my minimal intelligence, please). Thanks. |

It sounds like you are describing magazine follower tilt. It is caused, usually, by magazine followers with just a little bit of excess material snagging on the inside of the magazine and preventing the followers from sliding up correctly. In old style followers it is a defect in the follower design, but that would date to mid 1990s magazines.
Learn how to dis assemble your mags, clean off any obviously rough edges, clean and lube the magazines, and you will most likely be good to go. Most of the newer magazines don't have that problem but they can have issues of their own, so nothing is perfect. On occasion, ammunition can be the issue but that is less common. Start with cleaning up your current mags and it will be a very excellent learning experience. Please report back so we all learn from your experience. |
