So I just got my barrel back from a polishing process only to find that my barrel nut for my specific forend is 10 thou out of spec (too small).
I'm going to have my buddy lathe it a little bigger but my question was: do I want to keep it hugging the barrel through the nut or only connecting at the upper/nut land? It's not a question of structure (because tight onto the barrel would be fine then) it's a question of resonance. This is a bull profile barrel and rifle length so that's why I want to take the time to get the correct size. The barrel is 1.05" and the nut is 1.04" btw. |

Any chance you can post some pics? Can you get the barrel nut over the barrel and back to the shoulder on the barrel extension (barrel lugs)? If not then you will either need to get a new barrel nut, open up the barrel nut, or remove some dimension on the barrel.

I think your barrel is what is out of spec. I measured a USGI barrel nut at 1.010" and it is not hugging a standard barrel with a 0.970" measurement at the base. If I am not mistaken, all barrels are the same thickness at the base. In either case, with that small of difference, you can probably get away with knocking the finish off the inner diameter of the barrel nut.
I Googled it while I was typing this and it appears to be a common problem with bull barrels, and that is what a lot of people say they do. |
