I talked a buddy of mine into finally buying an ar and he picked up a 18" ss 1/7 Wylde mi key mod from psa on Black Friday. He also purchased a collapse able stock magpul lower from psa and a bcg and charging handle from fat boy tactical.
At the range there were a few problems. 1. Failed to feed. Rifle failed to feed ammo from magazine. Rifle would fire and fail to pick up next round. Bolt closed. Round stayed in mag. Chamber next round. Would feed sometimes. One fail to feed was: cartridge lodged in chamber. The rear of the case was still in mag and the bullet was angled into chamber. The bolt came to rest mid cartridge. Sorry no pics. 2. No last round bolt hold open. Rifle would fail to hold bolt open after last round 75% of the time. I used two different magazines. One was gi mag with magpul follower and one was 20 rd pmag. I have had no problems with either mag in other rifles. I tested these mags in another psa rifle and last round hold open worked every time. Rifle was well lubed with gun oil. I gave the mag release button and extra turn. No help. I traded out bcg with one from a working rifle. Same problem. I put the problem upper on a working lower and working bcg. Same problem. Ammo used: 1. Federal 55 grain; multiple fail to feed. No last round bolt hold open 2. M855; much less failed to feed but still happens. Last round bolt hold open 80% with 20% failure 3 pmc bronze; multiple fail to feed, multiple failures to hold bolt open 4 Tula 55; single shot rifle. Load, bang, cartridge stays in mag every time. No last round bolt hold open. The gas tube is pinned in the gas block. The gas tube does have some wiggle in the upper rcvr so it's not being pinched. The gas block has two set screws on the bottom. The screws were tight but are sticking out of the gas block about 2 or 3 threads. They are not flush. The gas block appears to be straight and flush with the shelf on the bbl. I'm thinking about removing the gas block to check for burs in the hole but don't know if I should even mess with it or try to use psa warranty. Any ideas? Should I cross post into psa section? |

Did buddy fully clean the rifle to start with, including scrubbing the chamber with a chamber brush and CLP, and was the upper recevier bearing area's correctly lubed with CLP as well.
The fact that you are using the term gun oil, would bank that neither the rig was correctly cleaned from the start to remove all the assembly/storage grease before it was fired, and the problem just worsened with the use of gun oil on top of such grease that may have collected debris in it as well. Whole forum on how to clean and lube the gun correctly from the start. http://www.ar15.com/forums/f_3/7_Maintenance_andamp__Cleaning.html |

While it can be a thousand things, here are a few of the problems I've encountered and was able to fix.
1. Gas blocked not aligned with gas port on barrel. New or factory isn't always for sure. 2. Gas key on BCG. Make sure it's tight. 3 Check the gas tube in the receiver. Is it straight or parallel with the upper? 4. Run a pipe cleaner fuzzy thingy thru the gas tube. A metal burr can be plugging it. Rare, but possible. 5. Get a better quality BCG. The first AR I ever built ran almost like how you have explained and it was a with a low end BCG new BCG made it run awesome Good luck! |
