Hi all I just finished my first sbr build and I was checking the barrel flash hider alignment before my can gets here. Im using a suppressor alignment rod and it wont fit im my barrel. The rod is 0.299 thousands and the barrel is 300blk. Could my barrel internal diameter be to small? Im not sure how to measure to check. Im planning on shooting it next week and i dont want it to have any problems.

Thanks

the rod will not go down the barrel because the lands are "higher" than .0045, which would then measure out at more than .299 if the groove measurement is .308.  SAAMI has not set min/max for barrel internal dimensions, and some companies have tight barrels, which should enhance accuracy.  do not worry about your barrel, it just means that the lands in the barrel are going to make a very positive engagement with the bullet.

Thank you barsik for the quick response. That makes sense. This is the frist time I ever checked my barrel in this was so when it didn't fit i was a little concerned. Again thanks for the help.

I'm guessing that you are going to run a can, and don't want a baffle strike?

If yes, then on a production barrel, I will just check to make sure that the barrel threads are concentric to the bore, and the barrel shoulder at the ends of the threads is square to the bore line as well.

You can pull this off with a alignment rod to some degree, but better to just check the threads/shoulder on a lathe instead.
The reason for this, on a short barrel with a heavy subsonic rounds, you want the bore aiming as true down the center of the baffles as possible.

If just for a short FS, then the rod gauge will work fine instead.
