It looks like you have a round of ammo stuck behind the charging handle, but in front of the bolt carrier assembly, in the charging handle track, so it will not come loose. To remove this, pull the action rearward (charging handle) as far back as you can, if you can get the bolt carrier assembly to lock behind the bolt catch then do so, if you cannot get the bolt carrier assembly locked behind the bolt catch then you need to reach in with a finger and put the finger in front of the bolt lugs and hold the bolt carrier assembly from moving forward. With the bolt carrier assembly being held or locked rearward, push forward on the charging handle, and this should take all the pressure off the cartridge and allow it to come loose.

Ditto for clearing the live round, and the problem is with the mag that is causing the jam itself. So on that note, have your friend pull the 40 apart to fully CLP clean it, and make sure that the inside of the mag is smooth, as well as the outside skirt of the follower!!!! Any burs that will bind up the spring or follower inside the mag body, and the top round is not help tight to the bottom of the feed lips. So what happens, the bolt comes back, you have the normal impact of the buffer to the back of the tube for a light jolt, and instead of the top round staying tight against the bottom feed lip, it gets fountain sprayed upwards (or at least the front end of the round) instead out of the mag, and the bolt coming forward just tip jam the round up around the gas tube. |
