For years I've been a lurker, I've learned so much and Thanks to all !!
I have a Stag 4H upper with a Stag Compensator it is pinned. I would like to remove the "A" front sight and put a free float hand guard. Don't have a mill, do have a drill press and drill press vise. Would it be better to drill out or use a end mill ? Will it bugger up the threads removing it ? |
| grind the "head" of the weld off and just get to the point that the "pin" is in there with no weld holding it. Then turn the comp back and forth and the pin should work its way out a little so you can get a hold of it and get it out. Yes it will damage the threads but you should be able to thread a new FH back on but it will defiantly be a misthreaded deal. No problem if you want to leave it on I would think. |

Will it bugger up the threads removing it ? Better question, why is the comp pinned? Is the barrel 14.5" and the comp had to be pinned on to make the barrel 16" rifle legal? If so, then removing the comp will require that another muzzle device be permanently attached after the FSB is replaced. As for measuring a barrel, lock the bolt home, then put a clean rod down the bore tight against the face of the bolt, mark the cleaning rod at the end of the device, then measure from the mark to the end of the rod. |

Why not do an "in-place" shaved FSB and avoid the hassle of possibly destroying your muzzle device and then dealing with removing a pinned FSB ? If you can shape metal, they can come out looking pretty sexy.... http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/Gas_Block1.jpg Quoted:

And a very good alternative. Barrel is 20", its a shooter will do 1/2" groups all day. At low power you see the front sight and would like a free float hand guard might squeeze a little more in group size. Would like to also put a bi-pod on for coyote hunting. I was thinking a carbon fiber ventilated had guard, any ideas on one at a great price. |

That is an exceptional shaved sight base - very cool!
OP, if you have no use for the sight base, I agree the best thing is to cut it down, but you still have to remove it and the muzzle attachment to install a free-float tube on it. This is because you have to remove the Delta ring and the front hand guard retainer. |

The front sight base can be cut and shaped in place. Just take your time and be careful. |

It's certainly easier if you remove the FSB but definitely not impossible to trim it while it's still installed. |

If he is going to install a float tube, then is uses it own barrel nut, and both the muzzle device and FSB will need to be removed to reinstall the barrel.
With luck, the muzzle device was bind pinned on standard barrel threads (1/2-28 pitch) for it to be a post ban barrel, and not just the Device press fit onto a non threaded barrel instead (read barrel will need to be threaded once the muzzle device is removed to install a FS instead). |
