Nothing that Hoppes makes should be even close to/used on the rifle.
Lube should be CLP, as well as cleaning most of the rifle with CLP, including scrubbing the chamber with a chamber brush and CLP. As for the rifle bore, something like sweets copper solvent to clean it first, then the chamber with CLP, is way to go. Sweets leave behind no resudue, so the CLP used to clean the chamber/shove out through the muzzle, is enough short term protection to keep the barrel bore from rusting. As for CLP, will still get some smoke from it burning off, but since it much thinner, don't end up with smoke clouds instead. |

ok so it is the oil I just want it to stop poring out smoke when I shoot what do you suggest I use anything special? Change over to CLP. It will leach out the old thicker Hoppes oil and remaining residues , leaving a thing coat of CLP after you have cleaned and lubed the rifle correctly with it; which will burn on quickly without leaving a smoke trail for someone to find you from miles away when you go to shoot the rifle again. |

Is there anyone who has had this problem who can give me some advice on this matter First off rule number #1 keep calm bro, it sounds like it is just the oil you use burning off. I have personally experienced this before when I applied too much CLP to the exterior of my rifle barrel, started putting rounds down range and the heat caused it to burn off causing some smoke. I would also suggest switching to a quality CLP. There are so many CLP's out there so I won't start a war over what is better. I would do some research here on arfcom in the maintenance section for CLP's. In my experience if you apply and leave too much CLP, oil etc on the exterior of the barrel when you start shooting and things get hot it burns off causing smoke. I hope this helps. ETA content. |
| Its not a 'matter' or 'issue'. Its normal for the first few shots. Once recently I forgot to wipe out excess oil in the gas piston/gas tube area of an AK - you should have seen the smoke pouring out of it. Sounds like you had some excess lube in the bolt carrier. I use Hornady 'One Shot' in my ARs now. It leaves a waxy dry film that doesn't smoke. |

If you see flames coming out other than the barrel then worry otherwise some oils tend to smoke when they get hot. Or, as Andrew Touhy proved, even when your MOE handguard bursts into flames and your BCG starts to resemble a charcoal briquette, all is still not lost. Just clean it, oil it up good and shoot shoot shoot. (ok, inspect for damage while you're at it if you insist |
