Ok my AR came with a 3oz buffer. With this buffer the gun would jam about every 3 shots but would lock open on the last shot. I went to an H buffer the gun ran flawlessly but will not lock open on the last shot. My question is would a different buffer spring make a difference.

if the bolt catches and holds open on the last shot you have a balanced system, as you described with the 3 oz buffer. I run my carbines with the Tubbs flatwire springs and spikes ST T2 buffers on a 16" mid length gas barrel.  make sure every other possible problem is eliminated like sticky chamber, gas leakage, etc. before you start throwing money away on parts that you may not need. Use only factory ammo, not handloads. BTW, what kind of jams are you getting?

The jams are a failure to extract with the spent round and new round jamming in the chamber

check that your chamber is smooth and uniform, then check your extractor. It sounds like you may have a problem with one of these, rather than a buffer/spring issue.

2.9 Oz buffer back in play, Make sure to scrub the chamber with CLP and a chamber brush during cleanings.  Something like Sweets copper solvent is the choice for solvent to clean the copper out of the bore (does not require a lot of scrubbing), while CLP is the solvent to clean the rest of the gun, as well as lubing the upper receiver bearing areas as well.

Next, Pull all the way back on the charging handle, and make sure that the face of the bolt does not retract back past the back edge of the ejection port window.  If the face of the bolt does retract back past the back of ejection window, pull the buffer and spring, and start dropping quarters down the tube before you reinstall the spring and buffer; to end up with the face of the bolt stopping around 1/8" to 1/4" in front of the back of ejection port window via the quarter spacer shims in the end of the tube.

Lastly, go hit a Hardware store, spend a dime on a #60 O ring, and install the new O ring around the outside of the extractor spring before reinstalling the extractor back in the bolt.  The O ring will disintegrate in about 500 rounds ,and by the time the O ring goes south, you should not need to replace it since the chamber should have self polished in through cleanings and live fire in this amount of time.
