When pulled back, my charging handle used to automatically chamber a round when released.  Now, when I pull the charging handle it just stays there and appears to be detached.  I have to press the bolt catch.  How can I fix this problem so it functions normally?  Sorry if this is a dumb question...

If this is happening after the last round in a mag has been fired, that's normal. If not, you're going to have give a more detailed description.

My bad, this is happening on an empty mag.  However, when I used to pull the charging handle back even on an empty mag, it released immediately.  Now it feels like it's not even connected

It's not supposed to release.  You pull it back, the bcg locks to the rear, you push the ch back to re-seat/re-latch it.

The bolt is supposed to lock back on an empty mag. When it does, the ch will feel "disconnected".  Thats good.  Just stow it.

As the last round is fired, the magazine's follower pushes the bolt catch up as the bolt carrier group clears it during the recoil. When the bcg returns to battery, the bolt is caught by the bolt catch. Because the charging handle is in front of the carrier, when the carrier is locked back, there will be no tension on the charging handle.

If your bolt catch was not catching on an empty magazine before; either the bolt catch was/is sticking, the bolt catch spring is weak, the magazine follower is getting stuck, or the magazine spring is weak are some things to check. Because as mentioned, the bolt catch is supposed to catch the bolt on an empty magazine in a properly functioning AR and/or properly functioning magazine.
