Took my REM 700 out to get it sighted in and then was gonna do the same with my recently built AR.
I put the magazine in and pulled the charging handle back but the bcg didn't go all the way forward so when I pulled the trigger it just clicked. This is what it looked like basically and it wouldn't go anymore forward. May have even been back alittle more then this. What am I doing wrong. http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s569/hawk30398/AR-15/20140320_151454_zpsl8zdyuds.jpg[/URL] |

Thanks for all the replies guys as soon as I get my membership card for my range I'll head out and check some of the recommendations.
I did try the forward assist but it didn't help. I have it lubed now and will make sure it is kept lubed. This is my first AR so I'm new to all this. It is a 5.56 and was using .223 ammo and they are factory loads. If anyone has pictures of some of the stuff mentioned it would be a great help so I can visually check some of the ideas. Again thanks for the quick replies. |

Chamber not cleaned of shipping preservative. Riding the CH forward, maybe. How'd the 700 sight in? |

How'd the 700 sight in? 700 is real nice at 50yds. was only at a friends place so didn't have 100yds setup but it's sighted in for the next range trip at least. |

Clear the weapon.
Separate the Upper and Lower Receivers Try cycling the BCG from locked to fully rearward several times, paying attention to whether the BCG slides all the way forward and locks up. You should feel a little increase in friction when the BCG is close to locked up. It's possible that the gas tube is not properly aligned with the carrier key, causing increased friction or worse. It's also possible that the BCG is not assembled correctly. |

What ammo in play, hence are we talking reloads?
If reloads, could be that either the cases where not full sized correctly, correctly trimmed, or even too much bullet crimp causing the shoulders of the case to be slightly bulged. If factory ammo, then double check the alignment of the gas tube to the key via the bolt-less carrier with key in the upper alone. Short of this, then maybe too much tension on the extractor that is not allowing it to climb of the case rim correctly, the extractor rim relief channel milled to high (bottom of relief channel not flush or slightly before the face of the bolt, head space too tight, or maybe a problem in the B/C-bolt tail not allowing the bolt to fully retract into the carrier or key top tab not aligning with the upper receiver cut out for it when the bolt goes to lock up. |

Also a photo of the back side of the bolt lugs where it mates to the actual barrel extension lugs would help as well. |

Caliber marked on the barrel at all?
Might be a 300 Blackout barrel/bolt. 5.56 & .223 will not fully chamber. http://www.oa2.org/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=14164#p136095 https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/607017__ARCHIVED_THREAD____5_56_fit_into_a_300_blk_chamber_.html&page=1#i5937685 |

This happened to me on a .308 build. Had a barrel custom made, then married up with a NiB bcg. Mine froze up using factory loads. Was resolved by shaving chamber material away. It was a headspace issue. The brass sticks in the chamber, and didn't go all the way to battery. Had to use a screw driver to pry bolt back.
Two choices: 1. take it to a gunsmith; 2. buy a headspace kit from MidwayUSA. Follow the instructions carefully. |
| Make sure you keep all wear surfaces lubricated and make sure you "slingshot" the charging handle when charging the weapon. If you ride the charging handle back inwards that will cause the bolt to not lock home. and i have no idear how your forward assist didn't push it home, my guess is you didnt hit it hard enough. Once again the AR platform needs lubrication in the BCG to work correctly i can't stress that to you enough |
