When I pull on the charging handle, all seems to work fine. But when I break the rifle open the buffer and buffer spring prevent the rifle from opening.  I have to release the forward take down pin first.  I find the buffer retainer pin in the trigger assembly area and its spring over in there as well.  Why is it doing this, is something missing?  Shot fine the last time I was at the range.  Finished cleaning it awhile back, so I double checked my reassembly and I see nothing out of place.  (Stock Stag Arms)

I'm guessing the buffer tube might need another turn (inward).  I go all the way in with them but still allow buffer retainer movement, you don't want it loose but also don't want it binding up on the edge of the buffer tube.

Or a turn outward if it is in too far and binding the pin.

I sure misread the OP. The others are are right,

Your receiver extension tube most likely isn't screwed in far enough.
Press the buffer retainer down into the hole and screw in the receiver
extension until it is holding down the buffer retainer but not so tight
that it is binding against the center post.  Make sure the buffer
retainer can move freely up and down by pressing on the center post.

Thanks guys.  That was it.  Still have a lot more to learn about this fine rifle

Think of the receiver extension as a buffer retaining pin retainer.
