I started with a Bushmaster A2 style AR-15. Never had a problem with it in any way except for a few faulty magazines that I threw away long ago.
I wanted a flat top upper so bought a stripped LaRue Tactical STEALTH upper and put the Bushmaster barrel on it and using the Bushmaster bolt carrier group, charging handle, etc. Didn't have any problems moving the barrel over, getting it indexed and aligned, and torqued it to the proper specifications. After getting everything back together I applied lube where needed and then tried to cycle rounds from known good magazines through it. Every round failed to feed. The bullet itself gets caught in one of the grooves (left or right depending on which side of the magazine it comes from) in the feed ramp. The round itself has barely left the magazine. If I pull the charging handle all the way to the rear and release it a second time, it feeds the round and the bolt seats properly. I then pull the charging handle all the way to the rear and the round in the chamber is extracted properly. I release the handle and the BCG moves forward until the next round gets stuck again. Repeats every single time whether I manually release the charging handle or lock the bolt to the rear and press the bolt release. Any ideas on why this is happening? Was my explanation sufficient or do I need to take pics and post them? Edit: the bullet tip is getting caught in the feed ramp. Couldn't remember the proper name for it earlier. |

Does your barrel extension (lugs) have standard or M4 style feed ramps, and does it match the upper receiver (If you have a standard barrel extension "feed ramps", it is best if they are not mixed with a M4 upper receiver, which if mixed together it could cause the feeding issue that you are describing)?

I was letting the charging handle go.
But regardless the problem has resolved. The fix... let it sit in my magical gun safe for 4 days. Took it to a gunsmith and he couldn't reproduce the problem. All he did was put an extra turn on the magazine retention lever. He said it was fine the way it was but he always puts an extra turn on them anyway. Took it out and it fired just fine. No clue what was causing the issue but it appears to be fixed now. |
